Research overview

Selank is a heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, or TKPRPGP in one-letter notation. The recorded structure has a free amino terminus and a carboxyl terminus, without additional modifications. Its chain contains three proline residues, at positions 3, 5 and 7. Its cited literature includes experiments in the IMR-32 neuroblastoma cell line [1]. That study examined the expression of genes involved in GABA-related signaling and neurotransmission, using quantitative PCR to assess changes in messenger RNA under several experimental conditions [1].

Selank alone did not change the messenger RNA levels of the genes examined in the cell study. In the condition combining Selank with GABA, the expression changes otherwise associated with GABA were largely suppressed [1]. The assay covered 84 genes, and the experimental conditions included GABA alone and Selank with GABA. The authors interpreted the combined-condition measurements in relation to GABA interaction with GABAA receptors [1].

The second cited paper used rats with and without unpredictable chronic mild stress and included an elevated plus maze as a behavioral assay [2]. The study compared behavioral indicators recorded before chronic stress exposure with those obtained under its experimental conditions.
