Peptide testing labs: what they test and how to choose

What a peptide testing lab measures, from HPLC purity and mass spectrometry to endotoxin and metals, how to judge a lab and what testing costs depend on.

What a peptide testing lab does

A peptide testing lab is an analytical laboratory that receives a sample, runs the tests requested for it and issues a report on that sample. When the laboratory is independent of both the manufacturer and the seller, its report is usually called a third-party test report. The report answers one question: what the laboratory found in the sample it received. Whether the result also describes the goods you receive depends on the link between that sample and your lot, which is why the lot number on a report matters.

Each report covers only the sample and batch printed on it. Verify it on the issuer’s website and check that the lot number matches the goods you receive.

The tests on a peptide test report

Most peptide test reports combine a few standard analyses. Each measures something different, so read every line with its method, unit and specification.

Common tests on a peptide test report
TestWhat it measuresHow the result is reportedWhat it does not show
HPLC purityThe share of the detected signal in the main peak after the sample is separated by chromatography.Percentage of peak area.Which compound the main peak is, or how much peptide the vial holds.
Mass spectrometry (MS)The mass of ions formed from the sample, compared with the expected molecule.Detected or conforms, sometimes with the observed m/z values. How much of the sample is that molecule.
Peptide contentThe amount of peptide in the vial, or its share of the solid’s weight.Milligrams per vial, or a percentage.Identity or purity.
EndotoxinBacterial endotoxin, usually by the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) test.Endotoxin units (EU) per vial or per mg.Sterility or chemical purity.
MetalsElements such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, often by ICP-MS.ppm or ppb, or not detected.Organic impurities or identity.

How an endotoxin test works

Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharides from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. They can enter a material through water, reagents or handling, and drying does not remove them. Even small amounts can activate immune cells in culture, so endotoxin results matter for cell-based assays and other work with biological systems.

The usual method is the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) test. Its reagent, made from horseshoe crab blood cells, reacts with endotoxin; gel-clot, turbidimetric and chromogenic versions read that reaction as a clot, as turbidity or as a colour change, and compare it with an endotoxin standard. Some laboratories use a recombinant factor C reagent instead. Results are given in endotoxin units (EU), so compare them with the limit your own method requires.

How to judge a testing lab

A report is only as useful as the laboratory and the records behind it. Before relying on a laboratory’s report, check:

  • Accreditation: whether the laboratory is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for the tests it ran, and by which accreditation body.
  • Method: the technique and conditions behind each result, not only the result.
  • Raw data: whether the chromatogram and mass spectrum are available on request.
  • Sample identification: product, amount, lot number, and the dates of receipt and analysis.
  • Verification: whether the report number can be checked on the laboratory’s own website.

What testing costs depend on

Laboratories usually price by test and by sample, so the cost of a report depends mostly on what you request. Before sending a sample, ask the laboratory for a written quote that lists:

  • Each test and its method, such as HPLC purity, MS, peptide content, endotoxin or metals.
  • The number of samples and the amount of material each test needs.
  • The turnaround time and any charge for faster results.
  • Whether the chromatogram, the spectrum and an online verification record are included.

The reports in our library

The reports in our report library can be read the same way, and each links to its issuer’s online record. TJQXGD reports list purity by LCMS/HPLC, a mass spectrum and the peptide weight or net content. Some add endotoxin, such as SNAP-8 10 mg report NP8 10-20260914S8218 at 0.259 EU/vial, and Glutathione 1500 mg report GTT1500-20260907S7260 also lists metals as “<50 ppb, As/Cd/Pb/Hg: not detected”. PRISTINBIO reports list HPLC purity and a mass spectrum, some with net peptide content.

The issuer (TJQXGD) states that the data come from a third-party partner laboratory, that neither it nor the laboratory holds CMA/CNAS accreditation, and that this document has no legal certification validity. The issuer (PRISTINBIO) states that the analysis is for information only and applies to the sample provided.

Ask for the documents for the exact lot in your quote. A report describes only the batch it tested, so check that its lot number matches the lot you receive.

Optional measurement

Umami analytics and first-party source measurement are optional. Separately, OpenAI ad measurement uses automatic matching: after you consent, its SDK may read supported contact fields and send hashed email, phone and name values, plus available location and browser data, for ad attribution. It reports page views and when you open WhatsApp, Telegram or email here or send an inquiry; message content is not sent. This permission is optional; enquiries work without it.
