Molecular weight is tied to a defined composition

Relative molecular mass is dimensionless. Molar mass is mass divided by amount of substance and is commonly reported in g/mol. Catalogs sometimes use “molecular weight” informally, so preserve the source’s stated quantity, units, and material form. The value only makes sense when the material's composition and form are clear. A sequence, salt, hydrate, solvate, counterion state, terminal modification, or isotope label can change the expected value.

For that reason, do not copy a molecular-weight value from a similarly named web page and attach it to a product. Use a controlled supplier document or an appropriate authoritative record that matches the exact form. If the source gives an average mass while another gives a monoisotopic mass, retain the labels; those values are calculated on different bases and should not be forced into one field.

A CAS number identifies a substance record, not a product offer

A CAS Registry Number is an identifier associated with a chemical substance record in the CAS Registry. When correctly assigned, it can help disambiguate names. It does not identify the seller, catalog configuration, package, lot, grade, analytical result, legal status, or intended use.

Not every research material has one simple CAS number that covers every form. Different salts, mixtures, hydrates, stereochemical forms, or modified versions may have distinct records or may require additional description. If a CAS value cannot be verified for the exact offered form, mark it NOT PROVIDED or REVIEW REQUIRED instead of borrowing a nearby value.

Names, sequences, formulas, and forms must agree

A robust record compares several fields rather than trusting one. The formal name, sequence when relevant, molecular formula, modification description, molecular weight, and CAS number should describe the same defined material. A match across fields is a consistency check, not an analytical confirmation of the contents of a container.

Pay attention to punctuation and qualifiers. Terms such as acetate, trifluoroacetate, hydrochloride, amide, free acid, hydrate, or solution can describe materially different records. If the product name is abbreviated, preserve the expanded form in the controlled data source and use the abbreviation only as a search synonym.

Understand common reasons values differ

Two sources can show different molecular-weight values because they refer to different forms, use average versus monoisotopic mass, include or exclude counterions, round differently, or contain an error. Two records can show different CAS numbers because one refers to a parent compound and another to a salt or defined form. The difference should be investigated, not averaged.

Capture each source, retrieval date, stated form, and value in the review record. Ask the document owner which form is actually supplied and which value belongs on the label, COA, SDS, and public page. Do not resolve a conflict by selecting the number that appears most often in search results.

What these fields do not prove

A molecular weight that looks correct does not prove identity, purity, assay, concentration, sterility, stability, or package contents. A valid CAS number does not prove that a supplier has the material, that a lot exists, or that a listing is lawful. Neither field is a certification.

Use these values for identification and record linkage within their limits. Product-specific claims still require verified documentation, and legal or promotional eligibility requires a separate jurisdiction-specific review. This separation is particularly important when a product category may include prescription, unapproved, controlled, or otherwise restricted materials.

Build a clean technical-information record

For each catalog entry, store the formal name, catalog number, material form, molecular weight with basis and units, CAS number when verified and applicable, formula or sequence source, source document, revision, and review status. Make unknown values explicit. A blank field should not silently inherit data from another variant.

On a public educational page, explain the fields without presenting unverified product data. On a product page, publish only the values confirmed for that exact record. If a field changes, retain the prior value and reason in the audit history so reviewers can understand whether the change corrected an error or reflected a new form.
